Why do we need to certify the Diabetes Educators?

The first and foremost reason is to standardize the applied knowledge and skills in the area of Diabetes Education and to:

1. Provide certain guidelines for every Diabetes Educator in the     performance of his/her functions as an instrument for measuring the     quality of Diabetes Education provided;

2. Achieve a high sense of professionalism in the field of Diabetes     Education;

3. Provide him/her with continuing professional and personal development     for progressive and personal self-realization.

The Philippine College for Diabetes Educators, Inc. is pleased to announce the first certification exam for diabetes educators on December 3, 2001. This exam is given only to healthcare professionals with vast experience in diabetes education. Their experiences and knowledge should extend beyond their field of professional practice as the questions are multi-disciplinary in scope. The exam reflects the real issues and situations that confront the diabetes educators in their actual practice.

Preparing for an exam (written and oral) gives you real incentive to keep up with the current trends in diabetes education. Recognition in this very specialized area is considered an achievement as diabetes educators must be consistent with the information they share with the people who have diabetes. Certainly, CERTIFICATION promotes the STANDARDIZATION we are aiming for.
