A
Message from the President
This is the 8th Celebration of Diabetes Awareness Week,
an event which is now considered an institution among
patients with diabetes and those who care for them.
|
A review of the past year makes us proud of what we have
done:
1. The continuation of our training course for
the teams of diabetes educators: there were (16) teams
which participated in this year's course: (3) from Mindanao,
(1) from Visayas and (12) from Luzon. We are specially
proud of the recognition accorded us by the International
Federation (IDF) through its Consultative Section on Diabetes
Education Committee. Thus, we all our efforts bring fruition
in this honor.
2. We have also been selected as one of the countries
mandated to participate in the IDF sponsored "Adopt
a Child With Diabetes Program." This aims
to address the plight of children and adolescents with
diabetes in developing countries. There are 3 countries
selected for this project, and we are one of them. Again,
this brings international recognition to our being.
3. The 5th Camp COPE was held again at the Los
Baños Forest Club where 35 young adventurous campers
with Type 1 diabetes gathered together for 3 1/2 days
for "Learning with Fun."
4. The 4th Diabetes Updates featured "Foot
Management: From Basics Onward." Guest speakers
were Sandy Dean and Anne Vinicombe from Melbourne, Australia.
This was held simultaneous with the Training Course.
5. The December Updates for Diabetes Educators
which serves as the National Assembly for the trainors
had Ms. Karen Edis from Melbourne, Australia together
with Ms. Betty Meritt deal on "Medical Nutrition
Therapy for Special Groups."
6. Going on are the Complications Assessment Programs:
a. Operation : Silip - Mata
b. Operation : Bantay - Paa
c. Operation : Kidney - Watch
which are studying the incidence of retinopathy, foot
problems and nephropathy among patients from 45 hospitals
nationwide.
Today is again the special day we have reserved for making
the populace aware of diabetes and its danger. Similar
celebrations are being held all over the country - a sign
of our unity in fighting the menace within us - diabetes
mellitus.
Let us all be constantly alert-today is a reminder of
that FIGHT.
